Apprenticeship success for Steven - (15/04/2009)

I left school after my GCSE’s. I did go into sixth form for a while but it wasn’t for me and I decided to leave and look for a job. I was thinking about retailing as a career and took my CV to loads of shops but I didn’t have a lot of luck. Then, Connexions told me about Palmersville Training. Connexions set up an interview for me. I went along and everyone was really friendly and helpful. I was offered a place on the Retail Training programme and I’ve never looked back.

I joined the apprenticeship programme. My first placement was at Asda in the warehouse and liked it right away. I decided to change from retail to a warehousing apprenticeship which was no problem. That’s what I like about Palmersville Training; the staff are very helpful and always ready to help sort out any problem. They treat you like an adult.

My first contract at Asda was seasonal; I worked three days a week over the Christmas trading period and came into Palmersville for two days to do Key skills. Now I am on a one day contract; so I work on a Saturday and come into Palmersville on Monday and Wednesday, Asda is great! The working environment is really good and I get on with everyone!

I enjoy coming into the training centre but Key skills isn’t my favourite part of the programme. It helps that it is relevant to my work. I’m doing an assignment at the moment which is about Health and Safety in the warehouse. On the other hand, I really enjoyed learning how to drive a fork lift truck and since being at Palmersville I have gained two fork lift truck licences.

I finish my programme in December this year and I would really like to get a job in the warehouse at Asda but at the moment I’m enjoying having a bit of spare time after the Christmas rush; it means that for now I’ve got more time to go to the gym!
